A useful career plan does not need to predict your entire future. It needs to give you a sensible place to begin and a way to adapt when new information emerges.
Describe your destination
Choose one or two roles or career directions you would like to explore. Read genuine job descriptions to identify common qualifications and capabilities instead of relying on attractive job titles alone.
Map your current skills
List your experience, education, languages, technical tools and achievements. Be specific about examples that demonstrate each skill.
Identify the gaps
Compare your skills with the requirements you find. Decide whether further study, practical experience, a short course or professional certification would be most useful.
Create 30-, 60- and 90-day milestones
- First month: research roles and speak with relevant professionals.
- Second month: select training and revise your CV or portfolio.
- Third month: review progress and adjust your approach using evidence.
Review your plan
Employment markets and qualification requirements evolve, so set a regular time to update your plan. Be alert to anyone promising a guaranteed job, visa or sponsorship in exchange for an upfront payment.
